"See No Evil"

In the book of Job, we are told that Job said, "I made a covenant with mine eyes." Job 31:1

Why do you think Job made a covenant with his eyes?

In the book of Psalms, David said, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes." Psalm 101:3

One again we see a man of God saying he's made a covenant with his eyes; so once again, I ask -- Why do you think it is important to guard our "eye gates"?

Let's see what the Word of God says about it.

In 1 John 2:15-18, we are told, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."

In these verses, we see the lust of the eyes. What does that mean?

Basically, I figure, the lust of the eyes justifies itself by saying, "It may be against the Word of God, it may be sin; I believe it's wrong. But, it's okay for me to watch someone else do it, as long as I'm not doing it myself."

I think it's important to mention the sin of covetousness (evil, unhealthy desire) as we become aware of what we allow our eyes to view, especially where the television is concerned.... envy, strife, sexual immorality, murder, theft, greed, deception, idolatry, witchcraft, drunkenness, drug use and abuse....... and the list goes on. This constant flow of ungodly images and behaviors, simply stated, desensitizes one to sin and the things of God.

In Isaiah 33:15-16, we read, "He that walketh righteously, and speaketh unrightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil: He shall dwell on high."

Once again we see that we must be aware of what we allow through our "eye gates" and our "ear gates" as well.

In Romans 13:14 we are told, "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lust thereof."

And in 1 Thessalonians we are told to "abstain from all appearance of evil."

Romans 12:1-2 says, "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God."

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to "Keep (guard, protect) thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

If we truly want to progress and have victory in our walk with Christ we need to be aware of and abstain from the constant, pointless, meaningless, and unprofitable images that are presented to us every day, mostly through the media.

We need to become sensitive to the things of God, and receptive and obedient to the Holy Spirit (God) who dwells within us. We must put everything that desensitizes us to sin and the things of God away from us. We need to be men and women after God's own heart.

Galatians 5:24-25 tells us that "they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."

My heart's desire is that you may know the blessings that await when you step out in faith and make sacrifices in obedience to the Word of God. In time, you may just find that you would rather watch the sun set than watch the television set. :)
